Cloud Nine’s elegant estate is sustainably-built for the future – in as many ways as we can implement in the present:
Preserving the Landscape
Your villa is built in harmony with the natural surroundings – the cliff-top site was a vacant lot not previously a forest, nor used for rice farming nor agriculture. Most of our trees still stand as they were before, amongst new scented gardens and tropical landscaping (all organic), which increase shade and enhance relaxation on the estate. In time, organic food gardens will nourish our guests at mealtime.
Passive Solar Design & Materials
Passive-solar architecture ensures maximum ventilation and cooling, all our villas were carefully designed to optimise positioning of doors and windows to work with high-ceilings for improved ventilation.
The villas’ design prioritises the use of natural materials. All materials are sourced in Indonesia or Bali whenever possible and recycled timbers are used wherever suitable. Your villa’s lovely natural timbers and stone assist with heat-management while pleasing the senses.
Furnishings and fabrics are all locally-sourced, mostly from small cottage industries specialising in natural homeware. These combined with high quality fixtures and fittings provide the perfect balance of modern convenience and eco-chic style.
Energy Efficiency
Aptly named, our light homes use natural lighting during the day from big windows, big doors and skylights. We use LED lighting as much as possible, especially in all common areas. Cooktops are on-demand and gas driven. The premium bath fittings in your tropical bathrooms provide a luxurious bath experience while reducing water consumption. Dual Flush WCs add to the water-saving features of your villa.
Water & Waste Management
Beautiful water-garden systems purify household water for re-use, automatically feeding your private garden every time you use the tap. Bio-septic tanks ensure that blackwater does not contaminate precious groundwater in the earth, especially since our cliff is embraced by a river. Plans are underway also for harvested rainwater to be used in gardens of the estate.
All organic waste from the villas are composted in-house for the estate gardens, with inorganic waste managed by a recycling service. We minimise the use of toxic or non-biodegradable chemicals, and offer luxurious natural soaps & amenities for our guests.
Gentle Swimming Pool
The estate’s salt-water swimming pool reduces the use of chlorine, resulting in a “lighter ” water that’s gentler on your body, more pleasurable to swim in, and safer for the soil.
Supporting the Community
Our estate’s presence should benefit the surrounding community and we endeavour to employ local Balinese people from nearby villages. They grew up in this neighbourhood, where it is close to their hearts, and this infuses their work on Cloud Nine with the warm sense of home. We hope Cloud Nine provides our staff with a nurturing and caring environment to develop into the wider world.
To contribute to the sustainability of Bali island, we will donate 2% of our annual net profits to help the street kids of Bali. Protecting and saving Bali’s finest treasure, her children, is the best way to ensure a sustainable future for the island.
Our estate will also use as much local produce, sundries and supplies as possible, thereby supporting the vibrant cottage industry network that makes Bali so special.
Operating for the Future
By building and managing the estate through methods that are eco-sustainable, our estate not only cares for the environment and community – it is also progressive and responsive to the needs of the future. We are proud to call our villas “light homes”, for they tread lightly and gently on the earth.
Our green efforts will not stop here as we keep exploring ways to lower our footprint on the earth – your understanding and support is much appreciated!
